A key of abbreviations for the names of the main lines of the cartographic grid is not proposed. They are not necessary if line name abbreviations do not meet city name abbreviations on the map.

A summary of the abbreviations of proper names used on the tiflomaps already published is given in the appendix.

Of the various abbreviations of a particular name used in two or more publications, the one that is more frequently used or does not coincide with abbreviations of other names has been selected. The same abbreviation of a city name used for several different cities was left in the list when these cities, due to the scale of the maps, would not be on the same map for the blind. In the list of abbreviations, the symbols (abbreviations of the titles) of the atlases in which the abbreviations are used are included.

Abbreviations are divided into established and recommended abbreviations. Do not use abbreviations other than established abbreviations of proper names. These abbreviations are shown in bold. Fixed abbreviations include, e.g., abbreviations of Polish voivodship cities and world capitals. The remaining abbreviations, i.e. those not highlighted in bold, are suggestions for adapters and creators of tylocartography. The list has been prepared so that the proposed abbreviations do not overlap on maps of a specific area, e.g. Europe.
